Accomplishments and Challenges in the Chesapeake Bay Program: Watershed and Estuary Models

چکیده

The reduction of nutrient over-enrichment (eutrophication) is the most important undertaking in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Efforts toward this end are guided and evaluated though extensive use of linked simulation models of the airshed, watershed and estuary. These models track the inputs of nutrients through the watershed and into the bay and predict the consequences to water quality and estuarine food chains. As the Chesapeake Bay Program moves beyond an important milestone—the year 2000—watershed models will have to perform effectively on smaller scales in order to effectively guide land use and waste management decisions. Estuary models will have to more effectively address the effects on higher trophic levels. Advancements in both the watershed and estuary models require a closer coupling among modeling, monitoring and research.

Enhanced HSPF Model Structure for Chesapeake Bay Watershed Simulation

For more than two decades, an HSPF-based watershed model has been used to simulate nutrient and sediment load delivery to the Chesapeake Bay. Over time, the watershed model has increased in complexity commensurate with the management challenges in Chesapeake Bay restoration. The increased complexity poses challenges to the standard application of HSPF for efficient operation of the model in a l...

Special attention has been paid to coastal fisheries, generating heated debates over the need to relieve pressure on populations through harvesting restrictions and habitat set-asides and to reduce non-point source pollution that broadl...

National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Research Highlights in the Chesapeake Bay

Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute endorsement or recommendation for their use by the United States government. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. It is a unique and valuable national treasure because of its ecological, recreational, economic and cultural benefits. The problems facing the Bay are well known and extensively documented, ...

Eutrophication and Carbon Sources in Chesapeake Bay Over the Last 2700 Yr: Human Impacts in Context

To compare natural variability and trends in a developed estuary with human-influenced patterns, stable isotope ratios ( C and N) were measured in sediments from five piston cores collected in Chesapeake Bay. Mixing of terrestrial and algal carbon sources primarily controls patterns of Corg profiles, so this proxy shows changes in estuary productivity and in delivery of terrestrial carbon to th...

GIS/EM4 - Modeling Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition and Transport in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed: A GIS Approach

Abstract The atmospheric deposition of nitrate and ammonia species has been identified as a major factor in the decline of water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. Recent reports have indicated that atmospheric deposition may account for 25 to 80% of the total nitrogen load entering the Bay. However, many uncertainties exist regarding the accuracy of these estimates including the accuracy of the at...
